Head of NSF’s Directorate of Engineering discusses diversity and research at FIU

Listening, learning and wanting to serve, Susan Margulies, head of the National Science Foundation’s Directorate of Engineering, led a discussion at the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) on Wednesday. “Engineering has a big road ahead in truly addressing diversity, inclusion and belonging,” Margulies said to a group of students and faculty.

FIU awarded $1 million to develop 5G/6G cybersecurity solutions

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a team of researchers, including researchers from FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing, $1 million to continue their work to help thwart cyberattacks ― from computers and mobile devices to large-scale networks.

FIU awarded $2 million to develop artificial intelligence cybersecurity tools

FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing researchers have received a $2 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to help develop technology to prevent, detect, analyze and mitigate cyberattacks against U.S. energy systems.

Engineering students’ seawater battery project wins first at Go Green North America

Seniors at the College of Engineering and Computing Alexandra Berkova, Ana Claus and Amanda Perez are innovating a way to alleviate lithium demand. The three mechanical engineering students are prototyping a seawater battery that would operate using sodium, a metal that can be pulled from the ocean’s sodium chloride molecules. The sodium would replace lithium in these batteries. Their battery uses sodium from the ocean to store energy. The Panthers will present the concept at Go Green’s global finals in June.

FIU Researcher part of team that has developed new miniature heart

Arvind Agarwal, chair of FIU’s Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and director of the Advanced Materials Engineering Research Institute, is part of an interdisciplinary research team that has made a significant breakthrough with the development of a miniature heart chamber, created from nanoengineered parts and human heart tissue.
