Senior Design Project

The Senior Design Project is a two-semester course required of all biomedical engineering students. Over the course of a full year, student teams work with real organizations to solve real problems in medicine and healthcare, then showcase their solutions to the public.

Two students at the senior design expo

Semester One: Learning and Planning

In the first semester, students learn the fundamentals of design, product development, manufacturing and quality control. They partner with biomedical device companies, rehabilitation centers and clinical research organizations to take on real, sponsored projects.

Small teams then write and present a proposal outlining deliverables and timelines to a faculty committee, ensuring each project is realistic and meets national engineering education standards.

Semester Two: Building and Presenting

In the second semester, students finalize their designs, build prototypes and test them against their original requirements. Guest speakers from industry share expertise on advanced manufacturing, protecting inventions and quality in engineering work.

The semester wraps up with the Design Expo, where engineers evaluate student work and a panel of judges assesses their command of engineering tools, standards and teamwork. Students then compete in a college-wide poster competition, presenting their solutions to the college community, the public and potential investors.
