Major in Mechanical Engineering
The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at FIU opens doors to careers in dynamic fields, including energy, manufacturing, robotics and mechatronics.
Demand for mechanical engineers is growing as high-tech industries continue to invest in innovation. Almost every new design or breakthrough in science, industry and business has a mechanical engineer contributing in the background.
In our program, you will establish a thorough understanding of fundamental science while stimulating your creative thinking, professional attitude, economic judgement and environmental consciousness.

Classes
When enrolled in our program, your prerequisite courses will focus on fundamentals in general science and engineering, before you specialize in one of three major areas:
- Fluid/thermal sciences and energy systems
- Materials, mechanical systems and manufacturing
- Design

Senior Design Project
This program requires a Senior Design capstone project to be completed in your last two semesters. You will be mentored by faculty and industry leaders as you work to solve real-world engineering problems through a team project, from product design to implementation and budgeting.
Prerequisite Courses
Before you can take upper-level Mechanical Engineering courses, you must complete the following prerequisite courses.
- CHM1045 - General Chemistry I and CHM1045L - General Chemistry Lab I
- MAC2281 - Calculus I for Engineering
- MAC2282 - Calculus II for Engineering
- MAC2283 - Calculus III for Engineering
- MAP2302 - Differential Equations
- PHY2048 - Physics with Calculus I and PHY2048L - General Physics Laboratory I
- PHY2049 - Physics with Calculus II and PHY2049L - General Physics Laboratory II
Laboratories
The program includes six semester hours of lab work, focused on problem-solving through experimentation in one of three courses:
- EML3301L: Instrumentation Lab
- EML3126L: Transport Phenomena Lab
- EML3702L: Mechanics and Materials Science Lab
