The Engineering Secondary Field (ESF) gives ESM Department students the chance to focus on an area of engineering or computing that interests them. To complete an ESF, a student must finish 12 credit hours. At least nine of those credit hours must be upper-division courses offered by CEC.
Students may choose a pre-approved ESF or create a custom ESF.
Pre-approved ESF
Students can select from one of five concentration areas, such as aerospace, HVAC, industrial or robotics. Each concentration includes an electronic form to submit an ESF approval request.
Each concentration lists more than 12 credit hours. On the form, a student should indicate the 12 credit hours they plan to complete. Students should meet with an academic advisor to finalize their selection.
Custom ESF
If none of the reproved concentrations fit a student’s goals, the student may build a custom ESF. Courses can be selected from different concentration areas or from other offerings within the college.
When creating a custom ESF, the plan should show depth, coherence and rigor. To request approval, the student must submit an application to the ESM Department that lists the selected courses. Most custom ESF applications are approved if they meet the basic credit hour requirements.
Students are encouraged to meet with the undergraduate program director and an advisor to discuss course selection, confirm that prerequisites are met and make sure courses are available to support progress toward graduation.
