FIU Appoints Jorge Riera Diaz, PhD Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering

The FIU College of Engineering and Computing has appointed Jorge Riera Diaz, PhD chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), effective Dec. 26, 2025.

Riera Diaz has served as interim chair since December 2021. His permanent appointment reflects his leadership, collaborative approach and the strong support he has earned from faculty across the department.

Throughout his tenure, Riera Diaz has strengthened BME’s academic and research portfolio while cultivating strategic partnerships that enhance the department’s impact. His work with Baptist Health continues to expand opportunities for translational research, clinical collaboration and innovation that addresses pressing health challenges.

Under his leadership, FIU’s BME graduate program achieved a significant national milestone this year, ranking No. 45 among public institutions in the U.S. News & World Report Graduate Program rankings. The recognition highlights the department’s growing visibility and upward trajectory.

BME’s research enterprise—spanning neuro and cardiovascular health, personalized cancer therapies, diagnostic bioimaging and sensor technologies—is advancing key areas of national priority. These achievements reflect both the dedication of BME faculty and the momentum fostered under Riera Diaz’s leadership.
