Course Outcomes

Specializations & Thesis Options

The MS in Materials Science and Engineering program requires students to choose one of five specializations to determine elective courses:

  • Ceramics
  • Electronic Materials
  • Metal and Alloys
  • Nanomaterials
  • Polymers and Biomaterials

  • Thesis Option

    The Thesis Option requires completion of a master’s thesis for 6 credits and 24 credit hours of coursework.

    The master’s thesis must be presented to a Thesis Committee consisting of three members with Graduate Faculty Status. Once approved by the committee, the student will present a thesis defense in the form of a public lecture.

  • Non-thesis Option

    The Non-thesis option requires 30 credit hours of coursework. Non-thesis students must submit a formal report and present an independent study project to an examining committee of three graduate faculty members. The committee will examine the report to ensure the student meets the program’s academic standards.

  • Application Requirements
    • 4-year bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, or mathematics, from an accredited institution
    • Submit the FIU Master’s Program Online Application, which will ask you to submit:
      • Official transcripts of all previously earned college or university credits
      • A statement or letter of intent
      • Three letters of recommendation
      • A statement of objectives
      • Resume or CV

  • International Students

    International students should refer to the FIU International Admissions site for additional instructions on how to apply or enroll as a first-time or transferring international student.

  • STEM Designation

    The Master of Science in Material Science and Engineering is a STEM-designated program. After program completion, international students have the opportunity of Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows students to work within the U.S. for up to 36 months (one year of OPT + two years of STEM OPT) for STEM designated programs.
