Master's in Cybersecurity

The MS in Cybersecurity at FIU is a professional graduate program that aims to prepare you for the growing need to protect data in both the public and private sectors. You will learn about the legal impacts of cybersecurity as well as how to build, lead and manage technological defense solutions.

Course Outcomes

In the MS in Cybersecurity program, our curriculum is designed to help you master specialized knowledge in practical digital subfields, including:

  • Cryptography
  • Secure application programming
  • Telecommunications standards
  • Machine learning

Concentrations

In the MS in Cybersecurity program, students must complete 12 credits in their selected concentration in one of two concentrations: Systems or Applications.

  • Systems

    Students who choose the Systems concentration will study security and privacy issues in computer, network and information systems.

  • Applications

    Students who choose the Applications concentration will study various aspects of cybersecurity, as well as security policy, compliance and management issues.

Thesis and Non-Thesis Options

The MS in Cybersecurity requires a choice between a Thesis or Non-thesis Option.

  • Thesis Option

    The Thesis Option requires completion of a master’s thesis for 6 credits and 3 elective course credits.

    The master’s thesis must be presented to a Thesis Committee consisting of three members with Graduate Faculty Status. Once approved by the committee, the student will present a thesis defense in the form of a public lecture.

  • Non-thesis Option

    The Non-thesis option requires 9 credits of elective courses. For more information on eligible electives, please view the University Catalog.

Program Information

  • Application Requirements
    • 4-year bachelor’s degree in engineering, information technology, computer science, or mathematics, from an accredited institution
    • Submit the FIU Master’s Program Online Application, which will ask you to submit:
      • Official transcripts of all previously earned college or university credits
      • A statement or letter of intent
      • Three letters of recommendation
      • A statement of objectives
      • Resume or CV

  • International Students

    International students should refer to the FIU International Admissions site for additional instructions on how to apply or enroll as a first-time or transferring international student.

  • STEM Designation

    The Master of Science in Cybersecurity is a STEM-designated program. After program completion, international students have the opportunity of Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows students to work within the U.S. for up to 36 months (one year of OPT + two years of STEM OPT) for STEM designated programs.
