Program Requirements

The MS in Computer Science requires 9 credit hours of coursework for all students and a choice between a Thesis or Non-Thesis Option.

  • Thesis Option

    The Thesis Option requires completion of a master’s thesis for 6 credits and 15 elective course credits.

    The master’s thesis must be presented to a Thesis Committee consisting of three members with Graduate Faculty Status. Once approved by the committee, the student will present a thesis defense in the form of a public lecture.

  • Non-thesis Option

    The Non-thesis option requires 21 credits of elective courses in addition to the mandatory 9 credits hours of coursework. For more information on eligible electives, view the course catalog.

Program Information

  • Application Requirements
    • 4-year bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical science, computer science, or mathematics, from an accredited institution. A degree in a related field is acceptable if the applicant shows evidence of a computer science background as judged by the Graduate Committee.
    • Submit the FIU Master’s Program Online Application, which will ask you to submit:
      • Official transcripts of all previously earned college or university credits
      • A statement or letter of intent
      • Three letters of recommendation
      • A statement of objectives
      • Resume or CV

  • International Students

    International students should refer to the FIU International Admissions site for additional instructions on how to apply or enroll as a first-time or transferring international student.

  • STEM Designation

    The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering is a STEM-designated program. After program completion, international students have the opportunity of Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows students to work within the U.S. for up to 36 months (one year of OPT + two years of STEM OPT) for STEM designated programs.
