Tracks & Specializations

The MS in Biomedical Engineering program consists of two tracks, Research and Professional, each designed to support different future outcomes.

  • Research Track

    The research track is geared to prepare the graduate for further graduate study or a career in biomedical research. It requires a master’s thesis or capstone project.

  • Professional Track

    This track is tailored primarily for engineers currently practicing in the biomedical industry and students interested in pursuing a management career in the biomedical industry. It requires a capstone project and oral final examination.

  • Application Requirements
    • 4-year bachelor’s degree in engineering, the physical/life sciences, computer science, or mathematics, from an accredited institution
    • Submit the FIU Master’s Program Online Application, which will ask you to submit:
      • Official transcripts of all previously earned college or university credits
      • A statement or letter of intent
      • Three letters of recommendation
      • A statement of objectives
      • Resume or CV

  • International Students

    International students should refer to the FIU International Admissions site for additional instructions on how to apply or enroll as a first-time or transferring international student.

  • STEM Designation

    The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering is a STEM-designated program. After program completion, international students have the opportunity of Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows students to work within the U.S. for up to 36 months (one year of OPT + two years of STEM OPT) for STEM designated programs.
