Mark Finlayson

Mark Finlayson, associate professor and associate director for research and academic affairs in FIU's Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences, has been selected for induction into the 2026 class of the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL).

Finlayson was recognized for his important contributions to the computational modeling of narratives, advancing understanding of the structure of cultural texts. ASEMFL membership recognizes individuals whose research, innovation and leadership have made significant and lasting contributions to science, engineering and medicine.

“One of the most exciting aspects of my research is its potential to bring science and the humanities closer together, enabling tools that allow us to apply a scientific lens to questions of culture and society that have long resisted scientific investigation.”

Finlayson is one of five Florida International University faculty members selected for ASEMFL's 2026 cohort and the sole representative from the College of Engineering & Computing. The recognition highlights his contributions to computing research and his work at the intersection of technology, culture and society.
