Florida International University’s College of Engineering and Computing is pleased to announce that, effective January 31, 2026, Arif Sarwat, Ph.D. has been appointed chair of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE).
Sarwat brings a distinguished record of scholarly leadership, collaborative spirit, and commitment to advancing electrical and computer engineering education and research. He has played an important role in expanding federal and industry-engaged initiatives within the college, mentoring faculty, and positioning our programs to address the evolving needs of the energy, AI, smart grids, quantum technologies, and intelligence sectors. His work reflects a sustained and deep dedication to innovation, student advancement, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
The department’s research strengths, including energy systems, AI applications, smart grid technologies, and intelligent systems, reflect the dedication and excellence of ECE faculty and the momentum fostered under Sarwat’s research and leadership.
The college also extends its sincere appreciation to Deidra Hodges, Ph.D. for her four years of dedicated service as chair. Under her guidance, the department strengthened academic programs, supported student success, and enhanced the visibility of ECE’s research and educational contributions.
