Biography
Xian Su is an assistant teaching professor at Florida International University, where he mainly teaches courses in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and algorithm techniques. Before joining FIU, Xian earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the Graduate Center, City University of New York, in 2024. His research focuses on applying information theory—particularly coding theory—to mainstream algorithms in ML and AI, with the goal of bridging the gap between theoretical results and practical applications.
Xian's teaching philosophy centers on a cyclical problem–solution–new problem framework that helps students grasp the logical evolution of a field rather than memorizing isolated results. He begins each topic with a fundamental motivating question and explains why it matters. He then introduces the established algorithms or methods that address the problem, followed by a critical analysis of their limitations. This naturally leads to improved or alternative solutions, culminating in state-of-the-art approaches and the open challenges that remain. Through this structure, Xian aims to equip students not only with essential knowledge but also with strong problem-solving skills, analytical reasoning and the confidence to pursue independent learning and research beyond the course.
