Biography
Norman Munroe is a Fulbright Scholar and professor in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering department. His research focuses on renewable energy, corrosion, and biomaterials that resulted in US Patents. Munroe is currently a Senior Researcher on a research grant entitled, Center for Integrated Renewable Energy and Energy Storage” (CIREES) at FIU that has been established with a $10 million investment from the Department of Defense (DOD) - to find solutions that support DOD’s strategic commitment to making climate resilience a national security priority. This research involves investigating alternatives to the Li-ion battery by focusing on multivalent ion batteries involving Mg, Ca, Zn and Al. Specifically, research is being conducted on the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) modelling of Zn anode and/or cathode with respect to understanding the mechanism behind dendritic growth and how to prevent its formation. He served as department Chairman, Associate Dean, and Director of Centers.
He served as major Advisor of over 30 doctoral and master’s students and dissertation committee member of over 130 graduates. He has over two hundred (220) refereed Journal articles/Proceedings/Presentations/Book Chapters and is the recipient of awards including FIU Excellence in Teaching, Florida State Teaching Incentive Program award, 2016 Educator award, Legacy Magazine, IAAM Medal for notable and outstanding research in Advanced Materials Science & Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Notable collaborations include partnering with the “Think Tank” Baker Institute on “Development of Opportunities in Deepwater Oil and Gas for the Security and Prosperity Partnership North American Forum”, Houston, Texas; partnership with the US Southern Command for development and technology transfer of a renewable energy powered Mobile Medical Clinic, Dominican Republic; and partnering with the Panama Institute of Technology and US Military on Biodiesel production.
