Biography
Kingsley Lau joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Florida International University (FIU) as an Assistant Professor in 2012 and was tenured as Associate Professor in 2018. Prior to joining FIU, Lau was a corrosion research scientist at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) State Materials Office. He obtained his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of South Florida in 2010. He published over 135 technical documents (including 41 technical manuscripts, 59 refereed conference papers, and 25 technical reports) and gave over 89 technical presentations (including invited webinars for the Transportation Research Board and the IBT/ABC-UTC) in the areas of corrosion and infrastructure materials durability. He was the principal investigator (PI) for ~$1.7 million and co-PI for ~$14 million (including a large federally funded project from NOAA (~$9.2M)) for funded research on 21 research projects since joining FIU. He is the co-PI for a ~$9.2M grant from NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science where is leads efforts on a corrosion study on the impacts of saltwater intrusion and design/implementation of a long-term corrosion monitoring system. He was named FIU Top Scholar by the university president in 2014 for his research efforts. He developed and headed the Corrosion and Infrastructure Materials Durability Laboratory. The laboratory has capabilities in the areas of electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, metallography and petrography, cement analysis, corrosion testing, electrical testing and fabrication, machine fabrication, as well as indoor and outdoor coatings testing and analysis.
