Biography
Jack A. Puleo is dean of the College of Engineering & Computing, associate vice president for strategic initiatives in coastal engineering and resilience, and a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida International University. He is also a member of the Extreme Events Institute.
Puleo earned bachelor’s degrees in oceanography and mathematics from Cal Poly Humboldt in 1996 and a master’s degree in oceanography from Oregon State University in 1998. From 1998 to 2004, he served as a research oceanographer with the Naval Research Laboratory. He received his doctorate in coastal engineering from the University of Florida in 2004.
His research focuses on hydrodynamics and sediment transport in coastal environments, with an emphasis on Department of Defense applications, nature-based solutions, disaster resilience and risk mitigation. Puleo serves as principal investigator on several multidisciplinary Department of Defense projects, along with a range of federally funded initiatives with combined awards exceeding $30 million. Much of his current work centers on coastal resilience and hybrid shoreline protection strategies.
Puleo has advised more than 45 graduate students and published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. His honors include a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, a Fulbright Program award, a German Academic Exchange Service award and a Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program Project of the Year Award.
