Biography
Emil Simiu (Ph.D., Princeton Univ., 1971; P.E.) served as senior structural engineer with Severud Assoc., New York and Ammann & Whitney Inc., New York before joining the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 1971 as a structural research engineer. He was named a NIST Fellow in 1989 and served in this capacity until 2022. Dr. Simiu was the 1984 winner of the U.S. Federal Engineer of the Year award from the National Society of Professional Engineers, and was the recipient of three U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medals, among various other distinctions. He served as Research Professor, Johns Hopkins University and as Distinguished Visiting Professor, Duke University. Since 2007 he serves as Professor of Practice in Wind Engineering, Florida International University. Dr. Simiu is the author or co-author of Wind Effects on Structures (4th ed. 2019, Russian translation 1986, Chinese translation 1990); Design of Buildings for Wind (2011), and A Modern Course in Aeroelasticity (5th ed. 2015, Chinese translation, 2018). He served as a consultant to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the World Bank, and various consulting firms.
