Armando Barreto

Biography

Armando Barreto is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at Florida International University (FIU) and the director of the FIU Digital Signal Processing Laboratory. Barreto has been part of the FIU ECE Department faculty for 30 years. His academic background is in Electrical Engineering, Digital Signal Processing and Artificial Neural Networks, having obtained his degrees from The National Autonomous University of Mexico (BS, 1987), Florida International University (MS, 1989) and The University of Florida (Ph.D., 1993).

Since 1995, Barreto has applied concepts of digital signal and image processing to the enhancement of User-Computer Interfaces, having developed human - computer interfaces based on the processing of signals such as the electroencephalogram, the electromyogram, eye gaze tracking, etc. Barreto has also developed approaches to enhance or augment standard mechanisms of human computer interaction through signal or image processing approaches, using custom deconvolution of images as a means to pre-compensate the images displayed on the screen of the computer to make them more informative for individuals with specific visual limitations.

Similarly, he has developed a system that adds spatialized sounds to the icons in a computer interface to facilitate access by individuals with “low vision”. Barreto’s lab has develop an interaction glove that informs the computer of the position, orientation and configuration of a user’s hand, in real time, using miniature Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) and an RGB-Depth camera. Barreto has authored or co-authored 2 books and over 300 technical articles that appear in journals, conference proceedings or as book chapters.
