Gustavo A. Chaparro-Baquero, Ph.D.

Gustavo A. Chaparro-Baquero is an associate teaching professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Florida International University (FIU). With more than two decades of experience in higher education, Chaparro-Baquero specializes in cybersecurity, real-time embedded systems, computer architecture, memory systems, and power- and thermal-aware computing. He holds a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from FIU, a Master of Science in computer engineering from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, and a Bachelor of Science in electronics engineering from Pontifical Xavierian University in Bogotá, Colombia.
At FIU, Chaparro-Baquero teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including network security, malware analysis, advanced microprocessor systems, and embedded computing systems. He is committed to student success and curriculum innovation, having led updates to key courses and coordinated different workshops. He has also served in leadership roles supporting ABET accreditation, accessibility initiatives, and cybersecurity education through the National Centers of Academic Excellence (NCAE) program.
Chaparro-Baquero’s research contributions include peer-reviewed publications in IEEE and ACM conferences and journals, with a focus on memory-aware scheduling, thermal-constrained real-time systems, and workflow modeling using Petri nets. He has served as a reviewer for several academic journals and conferences and is a member of professional organizations, including IEEE, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
In addition to his academic and research work, Chaparro-Baquero mentors senior design and research projects in areas such as IoT, drone systems, and cybersecurity. He is bilingual in English and Spanish and is passionate about fostering inclusive, hands-on learning environments that prepare students for real-world engineering challenges.
