Berrin Tansel, a professor in FIU’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been elected as a 2024 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

AAAS is the publisher of Science, one of the world’s most prominent journals of peer-reviewed research. Founded in 1848, the AAAS elected Tansel on the grounds of her contributions to science and engineering.

“I am deeply honored to be elected as an AAAS Fellow, which represents one of the most prestigious recognitions in the scientific community,” Tansel said. “This distinction from such a respected organization validates the importance of our work in environmental engineering and sustainable waste management solutions.”

Tansel has been with FIU since 1990 and currently serves as the Undergraduate Program Director for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Throughout her impressive career, she has established herself as a leading expert in water treatment, hazardous and industrial waste management, landfill processes and sustainable sludge treatment.

Her prolific research output includes more than 200 professional reports and papers, significantly advancing knowledge in these critical areas. Tansel’s distinguished career is marked by numerous recognitions, including the 2023 Pohland Medal from the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors.

At FIU, Dr. Tansel previously directed the Drinking Water Research Center and has been instrumental in shaping the university’s environmental engineering program.

Election as an AAAS Fellow adds to Tansel’s impressive list of fellowships, which includes the Water Environment Federation, American Society of Civil Engineers and Environmental and Water Resources Engineers. She will be formally recognized at the AAAS annual meeting later this year.
