  • UKG Academy for Computer Science & Education

The UKG Academy for Computer Science and Education began in 2015 to strengthen South Florida’s computing community by increasing the number of qualified computer science teachers in public schools.

The academy works with all three South Florida school districts and offers free, hands-on workshops and professional development that help K-12 educators teach computing and programming with confidence. It also hosts FIU’s High School Programming Competition and serves as the Southeast Regional host for the International Collegiate Programming Contest. As the Miami-Dade regional partner with Code.org, the academy gives educators the latest curriculum and training to inspire students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

A major part of its work today focuses on AI education for teachers. This includes how to use AI in the classroom and a clear understanding of how AI works. By bringing together teachers, administrators and students, the academy supports South Florida’s computing pipeline and helps grow new learning opportunities.

If you have any questions about the program, email Giri Narasimhan, program director, at giri@cs.fiu.edu or Nirmala Arunachalam, program co-director, at narunach@fiu.edu.

  • Sprinternship(TM) Program

The FIU Sprinternship™ Program created with Break Through Tech at Cornell Tech in New York City, gives students real experience, strong industry connections and practical training that helps them move from the classroom to the workplace.

Students build technical skills through program training and take part in a three-week paid Sprinternship™ with an employer. Many have used this experience to earn full-time job offers, showing how hands-on learning and teamwork can build confidence, technical skill and professional networks.

    • Created in 2022 to support the more than 4,300 students at the Knight Foundation School.
    • More than 200 students have completed a Sprinternship.
    • More than 20 employers have partnered with the program.

Past hosts include American Express, Miami Heat, UKG, Blackstone, Wild Fork, Miami Dade County IT Department, City of Coral Gables, Southern Glazer Wine and Spirits, FEAM AERO, Baptist Health, Televia Univision, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, ContinuEd and Origen Tech.

  • Tech Talent Academy

The FIU Tech Talent Academy helps engineering and computing students strengthen their career readiness and improve employment outcomes. It offers programming to build the hard and soft skills employers seek, including gamified activities and community-driven support.

Embedded in the Knight Foundation School, the academy guides students through their career journey by connecting them with resources across FIU and industry partners. It emphasizes building Open Source software portfolios and incorporates self-paced learning, peer support, industry mentoring and gamification.

Designed for sophomores, juniors and seniors, the program aims to bridge knowledge gaps, build confidence and boost internship and job placement. Signature activities include the Open Source Challenge, Open Source Fest and the Tech & Talent Awards.

The academy uses a selective admissions process to ensure students are prepared to succeed. It is intended for students comfortable with programming and able to learn new computing concepts quickly. Students struggling in computing coursework should first focus on improving academically and seek guidance from their advisors.
