FIU in conjunction with FIU’s STEM Transformation Institute invites applications and nominations for open-rank faculty including the position of Founding Director of the newly formed school dedicated to computer science and engineering education. This new unit, which is part of FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing, adapts the engineering education research model established at other universities and will be the first engineering education department/school at a minority-serving institution. It will house two new degree programs: a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Computing Education.
Faculty in the new school will work collaboratively with faculty in the STEM Institute, and as appropriate with other departments in the College (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, and Computer Engineering, etc.) to conduct innovative education research in their discipline and advance the transformation of the undergraduate engineering and computer science education. The Institute conducts multidisciplinary research across the Colleges of Arts, Sciences, & Education and Engineering & Computing, as well as stakeholders throughout the K-20 spectrum, to support its mission. FIU’s STEM Transformation Institute is an FIU preeminent program that houses 14 Discipline-based Education Researcher (DBER) faculty in 7 departments across the institution and has attracted over $30M in external funds over the past 4 years. The Institute envisions FIU as a laboratory for the future of STEM, as FIU is an urban public research institution located in Miami, Florida. FIU is the fourth-largest university in the nation, with 57,000 students, 80% of which are from historically underrepresented groups. FIU is a Carnegie-designated R1, Highest Research Activity, university.
Successful candidates will be expected to establish/maintain a strong research program (external funding, peer-reviewed scholarly work, national/international collaborations, mentoring of undergraduate/graduate researchers), teach/design transformative STEM courses in their discipline, and provide service to their college in order to contribute to the STEM Institute’s mission in these domains.
The Founding Director, who will report to the Dean of the College, will be a visionary that has the unique opportunity to impact the direction of a newly-formed school and its degree programs and provides leadership for faculty, staff, and students. FIU has a vibrant research environment, a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, a strong record of engagement with community partners, and a trajectory for continued growth. Successful candidates for the Founding Director position must have outstanding credentials in computer science or engineering education and research and a commitment to facilitating the growth of the new school. The candidate will provide strategic and academic leadership in education, interdisciplinary research areas, service, and engagement activities. As the School’s chief administrative officer, candidates will provide effective management for all academic, administrative, budget and personnel decisions.
