First Time in College (FTIC)

First Time in College (FTIC) students are defined by the Florida Board of Governors as students who have earned a standard high school diploma from a Florida public or regionally accredited high school, or its equivalent, and who have earned fewer than twelve (12) semester hours of transferable college credit since receiving a standard high school diploma or its equivalent (Source: Florida Board of Governors). FTIC students must meet the admission requirements for selected programs in the College. The general CEC admission policy can be read here: https://cec.fiu.edu/academics/student-resources/advising/admission-policy.

Prospective FTIC students and parents seeking information regarding the College’s programs are welcome to contact the College’s Advising Offices and meet an academic advisor for the program they are seeking admission.  Please note the Advising Offices are not Admissions Office, hence prospective applicants with admissions related questions should contact the FIU Office of Admissions at   https://admissions.fiu.edu/ or by calling 305-348-7000 for admission related questions or topics.

Transfer Students

Transfer students are defined by the Florida Board of Governors as undergraduate students who have earned twelve (12) or more semester hours of transferable college credit since receiving a standard high school diploma or its equivalent (Source: Florida Board of Governors). Transfer students must meet the admission requirements for selected programs in the College. The general CEC admission policy can be read here: https://cec.fiu.edu/academics/student-resources/advising/admission-policy .

Transfer students from Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach State Colleges planning to complete their AA degree should complete all lower division required coursework for the program they intend to apply for at those institutions before to transferring to FIU.  This will not only expedite time to graduation but also minimize state excess credit surcharges incurred if such courses are not completed prior to transferring to FIU.  These courses include all required 1000-2000 level Math, Chemistry and Physics courses among others.  A list of transfer courses is available for each of the schools above at the FIU Transfer Guide page:   https://transfer.fiu.edu/transfer-101/transfer-guides/.

For transfer students from other Florida Public State Colleges and Universities the statewide course numbering system facilitates transferring of courses into FIU. Prefixes and numbers of the prerequisites should be identical or near-identical to courses at your institution. Students planning to transfer to FIU should confirm what courses are potentially transferable to the major with a CEC academic advisor. Upper division courses will be evaluated individually for transferability.  Student must provide original, detailed syllabus for the course for the evaluation and determination of eligibility by the corresponding academic department. Please refer to FIU Transfer Guide for more information.

FIU’s Transfer and Transition Services (TTS) maintains a Transfer Equivalency Database (TED) for course equivalency between FIU and many institutions nationwide for students planning to transfer from Private or Non-Florida Colleges and Universities. If a course taken does not appear in TED, an original detailed syllabi of the course(s) for which transfer credit is sought must be provided.  For 1000-2000 level math, science, English, humanities, social sciences and arts courses syllabi should be submitted for evaluation to TTS at SASC 440.  3000-4000 level major specific courses must be submitted for evaluation through the academic advisor. Submittal of syllabi must be in person, via appointment with the student’s assigned academic advisor.

International Transfer Students must comply with all FIU admission requirements as determined by FIU’s Office of Admissions.  International transfers must be prepared to submit original syllabi in English for any coursework for which transfer credit is sought. Submittal of syllabi must be in person via appointment with the student’s assigned academic advisor.

Prospective applicants with admissions related questions should contact the FIU Office of Admissions at   https://admissions.fiu.edu/ or by calling  305-348-7000.
