Mechanical and Materials Engineering
Department Overview
The Bachelors of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering program has been reviewed and reaccredited by the ABET until September 30, 2021. The awarded undergraduate B.S. degrees increased 28% and reached to 102. The department awarded 27 graduate degrees while more than 100 journal and conference papers were published.
Faculty Highlights
The department had a successful ABET visit and re-accredited until September 30, 2021
Dr. Pezhman Mardanpour was hired. Dr. Mardanpour received his PhD in 2013 from the School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech. He worked at the UCLA for his PostDoc from 2013 to 2016.
The 8th international meeting SMEC 2015, which is a biannual event organized by CeSMEC, was held during March 8 to 15th, 2015. The meeting brought 150 participants from many countries. Ninety lectures on many materials science topics were given. The meetings have resulted in formation of several new international research collaborations.
Dr. Lin was nominated to serve as the Research Subcommittee Chair for TC 4.10 Indoor Environmental Modeling of ASHRAE.
PhD programs were modified to graduate students more quickly.
The department’s all certificate, undergraduate and graduate programs were modified to be SACS compliant.
Student Highlights
Mechanical and Materials Engineering graduated 102 BS, 4PhDME, 3PhDMSE, 14 MSME and 6 MSMSE students.
Mr. Sami Awad Azrak, Mr. James Caraballo and Mr. Yonatan Rotenberg received the 2nd place Odebrecht Award competition in 2014 with Sprayable Solar Panel as Sustainable Low Cost and Disaster Relief Energy Source.
FIU’s SAE Formula One team competed in Michigan this past year for the second time. They were able to actually pass all inspections and compete in all events first time. Also our aerospace club did extremely well in competition this past year.
FIU’s Aerospace Engineering Club and their advisor Dr. Brian Reding placed 6th out of 40 universities in the SAE Aero Design Competition.
FIU’s SAE club with their advisers Dr. Andres Tremante and Brian Reding participated to the Formula SAE Competition on May 12-17 for the second year in a row and first time ever finished all the Static & Dynamic events. The same team also participated the Shell Eco Marathon April 10-12.
Mr. Soheil Reddy received ASME – “Best Overall Impact Simulation Award” at 2014
Innovative Design Simulation Challenge student competition and he is a finalist in the ASME
2015 Innovative Design Simulation Challenge student competition slated for August 2, 2015.
Mr. Long Phan, a Ph.D. student in Dr. Lin’s group, was awarded the 2015 Grant-In-Aid scholarship from ASHARE.
Dr. Majid Beidaghi, who received PhD from Dr. Wang’s group in 2012, will join to Mechanical Engineering Department of Auburn University as a tenure-track Assistant Professor starting August 16, 2015.
Our MS. Student Mr. Soheil Reddy and a new applicant Mr. Pranjal Nautiyal received presidential fellowship. Mr. Kamran Moradi, Mr. Abas Abdoli, Mr. Chandan Pulletikurthi, Mr. Yongzhou Sun, Mr. Hadi Fekrmandi, Mr. Robel Kiflemariam, Mr. Yin Song, Mr. Sadegh Behdad, Mr. Vishal Musaramthota, Mr. Siavash Rastkar and Mr. Chunhui Chen, received Dissertation Year Fellowships. Mr. Sadegh Behdad, Mr. Vishal Musaramthota, Mr. Chunhui Chen, Mr. Yong Hao and Ms. Richa Agrawal, received Dissertation Evidence Acquisition Fellowships.
Mr. Sohail Reddy who was the highest ranked ME MS student won the best MS student award of the College at the Order of the Engineer meeting in Summer 2015.
Community Engagement
Student organizations of the Mechanical Engineering Students involved with the Engineers on Wheels program. The Engineers on Wheels visited approximately one South Florida high school per week. They organized rides with a special purpose bike built by mechanical engineering students. The bike generated power for a blender and LED lights. The blender was used to make smoothies. Students introduced robotics, buoyancy, structural design and aerodynamics to high school students.
Collaborative efforts were discussed with the American Welding Society (AWS).

Dr. Arvind Agarwal and Dr. Benjamin Boesl won a grant to receive $581,000 award to start in Sept 2015 from DOD HBCU/MSI Research and Education Program – Army Research Office.
Dr. Dwayne McDaniel, Dr. Benjamin Boesl and Dr. Shakrat Khizorev received a $360,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research.
Dr. Zhe Cheng has received an award from the DOE University Coal Research (UCR) for minority institute for $249,000.
Dr. Seckin Gokaltun and Dr. George Dulikravich received $250,000 from DOE/NETL.
Dr. Veena Misra, Dr. Shekhar Bhansali and Dr. Bilal El-Zahab received $85,610 from NSF.
Dr. Chengxian Lin and Dr. Dexin Wang and received $500,000 (FIU share $50,000) from DOE.
Dr. Chengxian Lin received $65,968 from FESC for course development.
Dr. Sabri Tosunoglu and Dr.Ibrahim Tansel received $50,815 from TYB LLC.
Fall Term Enrollment
Fall term enrollment followed the trend and increased 9 percent. The number of headcounts increased 60 percent in last 4 years.
Degrees Awarded
Mechanical and Materials Engineering graduated 103 BS, 4PhDME, 3PhDMSE, 14 MSME and 6 MSMSE students. Compare to last year the number of the graduated undergraduate students increased 28 percent.
