WHAT: FIU’s College of Engineering & Computing will welcome K-12 students for hands-on experiences and tours aimed at encouraging them to pursue engineering careers. This first-hand approach will give students the opportunity to learn about various engineering disciplines, visit 50 labs and interact with FIU engineering students and faculty. Among the activities, students will learn about physics and the dangers of texting while driving in the Driving Simulation Lab; the importance of nanotechnology in areas such as medicine and computing in the Nanotechnology Lab; and some students will have the opportunity to use wearable sensors to drive toy cars using their muscles in the Adaptive Neural Systems Lab.

Now in its 16th year, the goal of the Engineering Expo is to encourage students to think about the various career paths that engineering degrees offer while familiarizing the students with FIU.

WHO: More than 1,500 K-12 students from nearly 40 Miami-Dade and Broward public and private schools will be on campus for tours led by FIU’s engineering students.

*Interview opportunities with professors and students. One student leading the tour, David Vallejo, attended the Expo as a high school student in 2011, which inspired him to study electrical engineering at FIU.
