Shu-Ching Chen, an eminent scholar in FIU’s School of Computing and Information Sciences, has been named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The honor recognizes his contributions to the fields of multimedia data management and disaster information management. His research has appeared in top journals and been presented at conferences and adapted for use by government agencies.
Dr. Chen has been recognized by the research community internationally for his development of innovative and fundamentally new methodologies and applications. A patent holder, he has published his research in more than 300 papers as well as four books.
“I am humbled. I feel honored,” Chen said. “I’ve spent my whole career at FIU, and I really appreciate FIU giving me the opportunity to build up my professional career. I have an opportunity to work with a lot of good people in other units and also my department. I am happy for me, for my school, also for FIU because we need people to get this recognition to bring FIU to another level.”
Chen received his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1998. He served as the chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Multimedia Computing and on steering committee for several conferences. His work has earned him other awards from IEEE as well.
