Miami’s unique geographic position makes PortMiami easily accessible to Caribbean and Latin American markets, as well as those of Asia and Europe by way of the Panama Canal.

With the expansion of PortMiami to accommodate the largest ships in the world, and the rise of Miami International Airport to first place among all U.S. airports in international freight and cargo, Miami is becoming the North American hub for logistics.

FIU College of Engineering & Computing is responding with the launch of two new Master of Science (MS) degree programs for information technology (IT) and logistics professionals. Cohorts in the Evening MS in Engineering Management (MSEM) in logistics programs plan to start as early as August 2013 and the Professional MS in Information Technology (MSIT) in January 2014.

“FIU is meeting the needs of the growing tech and logistics industries in South Florida,” said Amir Mirmiran, dean of the College of Engineering & Computing. “Our new graduate programs in logistics and IT are designed to provide these rising industries in Miami with the skilled managers and executives needed to run them.”

Both programs are part of a unique accelerated one-year format designed for working professionals and executives. The programs follow the success of the College’s two professional programs in engineering management and construction management  that are currently running at the FIU Pines Center. The condensed curriculum, online-available lecture videos, and catered meals provide a flexible and convenient alternative to traditional graduate programs.

The Professional MSIT will take place at FIU’s Modesto Maidique campus in Miami and will be offered in a unique hybrid format, combining five online courses with five traditional classroom courses. With specialized courses targeting high impact areas including security and networking, the program is expected to draw IT and business professionals from across South Florida.

Geared towards engineers and business professionals working in logistics, and convenient to PortMiami and the financial district, the Evening MS in Engineering Management will be offered at the FIU’s Brickell location. Taught by the same faculty who teach the traditional master’s degree programs, the program will consist of five 10-week terms, with courses taught twice a week in the evening.
