Re: 2012 Faculty Convocation & Awards Events
FIU will hold its annual Faculty Convocation events on 27 and 28 September 2012 to celebrate the academic achievements of our faculty. I would like to invite all members of the university community – faculty, students and staff – to attend the events to recognize the collective contributions of our faculty in the areas of teaching, research, service, engagement, librarianship, mentorship, and advising.
The Faculty Convocation Awards Ceremony and Reception are scheduled for Thursday, September 27th, from 3:00-5:30 pm. Twenty four members of the faculty will be honored for their achievements. The winner of the President’s Council Worlds Ahead Faculty Award will also be announced at the event. This award recognizes sustained excellence in all three areas of teaching, research, and service.
Our keynote speaker at the ceremony will be Dr. Ira Harkavy, Founding Director, Netter Center for Community Partnerships, University of Pennsylvania. His address is entitled “University-Community Engagement, Advancing Knowledge, and Realizing America’s Democratic Promise in the 21st Century” and will offer specific insights into FIU’s rich potential for meaningful community engagement activities. Dr. Harkavy will also lead a workshop and roundtable discussions the following day, which is organized by the Office of Engagement.
Our annual Faculty Convocation Concert is scheduled as a matinee for Friday, September 28th, from 3:00-5:00pm, and performed by FIU School of Music faculty and student ensembles. This year’s concert will showcase music from Eastern Europe. A wine and cheese social at the Wertheim Rotunda will immediately follow the concert.
I am grateful that Robert Dundas, Associate Professor of Music, Director of Vocal Studies and Founder/Director of the Opera Theater, has assumed the responsibilities as Chair of the Faculty Convocation Committee. Under his leadership the committee will continue to plan and carry out these celebratory events and further cultivate this important tradition.
In summary, the Convocation event schedule is as follows:
Thursday, September 27 – 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
- Faculty Convocation and Awards Ceremony & Reception
Wertheim Performing Arts Center & Frost Art Museum
Friday, September 28– 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Please join us at the events to show your appreciation and recognition of our faculty.
